Walimu Co-operative Union Ltd is a teacher Based Savings and Credit institution guided by ethical values and the desire to economically empower and support them as they do their job. The SACCOs Union Ltd was registered on 24th December 2015 registration number 10739/RCS under the Co-operative Society regulatory framework.
The registrar of cooperatives provided technical guidance that saw the teachers SACCOs union successfully registered with the aim of improving the teachers’ access to economic and social livelihood.
Over the past 3 years WASU has successfully implemented teachers’ based economic support programs that have improved the livelihoods of over 10,000 teachers in Uganda and the revolution is still on going.

Vocational and Life Skills training
WASU has partnered with the Uganda Government;basically Ministry of Education and Ministry of Trade & Cooperatives to implement one of the largest teachers’ based economic support programs in Uganda in the arena of Micro –credit support (loans) to the members. Whereas there is the umbrella body at Walimu Headquarters, there are also Teachers’ primary Saccos scattered all over the country ,divided into 4 regions namely; Central, Eastern,Western and northern region. This program is designed to make schools a locus for teachers empowerment as they occupationally deliver educational knowledge material to the young Ugandan children at Primary & secondary level. The programme is intended to keep the teacher focused on delivering education while they also get the financial empowerment as and when they feel they need it at the right time in the right place of convenience with no interruptions on occupational engagement in their work places.
Other founder member body that led to the inception of WASU is the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) which remains in the background as the teachers’ platform for human rights and privileges that improve the teacher’s identity and benefit in relation to the environment and the socio-economic and political climate in which the teacher operates.
The Walimu Co-operative Union membership is drawn from teaching individual members, employees in public and private schools across the country. The SACCOs Union focuses on savings mobilization and credit initiatives in Uganda.
